Pies – A curious observation

My friend Suzanne is the only person who I know who makes pies from scratch. This means she makes her own pastry. She makes great pies … deep dish! I make lemon meringue pie with a graham cracker crust. I have no pastry skills.

I have been quite amazed since arriving in Ontario as to the passion these folks have for their pies. I have had this treat so frequently that I seem to be developing an addiction. Worse than an addiction, I find myself evaluating pies. Now there is no such thing as a bad pie, but one can begin to become fussy as to how well the two layers are pinched together, how much the syrup then leaks out, how flaky is the crust, how runny is the filling … I am a pie afficienado!

There were great pies at the Octoberfest. I wish I would have remembered to take a photo of the “pie shelf” before dessert was served, but you’ll get the idea of how many pies were donated to the event. For photos, click here.
