Desboro – The Weather Vortex

I’ve gotten to know Larry & Linda – the proprietors of the country store in Desboro, which is 4 km north of the parsonage. They operate the post office, so I see them regularly.

Larry has explained how the weather around Desboro works … it is like there is a 4 km vortex surrounding the town which causes the most variable weather patterns. If it rains everywhere else, it doesn’t in Desboro. If there’s a blizzard in Desboro, there’s only fluffy flakes everywhere else.

When I arrived in the fall and Larry told me this, I said to myself, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.”

I’ve now witnessed “The Vortex” firsthand.

I’ve driven through a blizzard which started a mile before Desboro and ended a mile the other side.

But here’s the best story …. Pastor Sheilah & I were passing through Desboro, after leaving Chesley, on our way to Owen Sound. We’re 1 km west of Desboro and I say “Look at that fog hanging over Desboro!” It was like a UFO hovering over the town. The sun was shining everywhere else, but this soupy grey gloom was right on top of Desboro … and you could see where the “fog” started and stopped.

Pastor Sheilah started laughing hysterically at me and said, “That’s not fog! That’s snow!” I said, “No it’s not! Look it’s hovering!” A half km latter we were driving into Desboro and the fluffy flakes had started. We stopped to pick up the mail and I reported my story to Linda. I told her that I had not believed Larry …. indeed I had mocked him ….. but I was wrong. Linda said, “Larry’s kind of spooky that way!”

I’ve been watching Season 1 of the X-Files …… I know what she means by spooky!

Gee, combining the fact you live in a weather vortex and your ability to turn off street lights as you drive by might make for a lethal combination or be just totally weird. Have you told your friends in Ontario of your unique electro-magnetic effect? (Come to think of it, maybe that’s why your heating system in your house is sometimes so erratic!!)

  2. Doug – It’s not necessary to provide Mary & Jen with any extra ammunition.

I don’t think they would understand my electro-magnetic capabilities, even though you have now vouched for their authenticity!

  3. Jennifer Chase says:

Thanks, Doug. Feel free to pass on any other “special” qualities that Kristin has…. :) We’ll only tease her enough to make sure that she feels right at home here in Ontario. We wouldn’t want her to miss life in SK too much, you know.

(Kristin, I feel your pain…. there are FAR too many embarrassing stories floating around about me. I think telling funny stories about me is one of my mom’s favorite pastimes! I know it is Mike’s.)

  4. When I spoke to Doug he said, “He was pleased to ‘prime the pump’ for you & Mary.”

I don’t think there should be any more “poor Doug” statements! (Maybe I could hope for 1 or 2 “poor Kristin” comments??)

  5. Mary Golem says:

Dearest Kristin … you can HOPE all you want for some “poor Kristin” comments, however, there won’t be any coming you way!!!
Thank Doug for the ammunition .. which will certainly come in handy!
Perhaps those were the forces at work on Tuesday night at St. Peter’s when Kristin attempted to slide the crocheted snowflakes on a wire. Even being on her hands and knees for that didn’t help.
As for you, Jen … we have to tell stories about you. There are, after all, NO Mary-doing-stupid-things stories!!!

  6. Jennifer Chase says:

I`m not even going to ask about the snowflakes….

As for stories about my mother, how about I wait until after Christmas… You know, so that I have an excuse to not come home for 3 months (because of snow)…

  7. I have photos to post shortly that will show the snowflakes … before the damage that I did and they decided to not go the suspended snowflake route. Oh, the entertainment I provide never ends!

  8. Jennifer Chase says:

It’s true. Why do you think we like you so much?

  9. John Pulley says:

This is the first time that I have seen the comments on this story. It sure is nice to see that Doug got in on the act. I thought perhaps he was a silent partner. Way to go Doug. Can’t have all those women carying all the comments on this website.
