Reflecting on Turning 50

I’ve met a number of amazing 55 year old women over the past ten years and I’ve truly been looking forward to turning 55. These women seem to have a certain zest and confidence that seems to be associated with reaching an age where they truly know who they were and what it was they still want to experience in their lives … and they don’t really care about my or anyone else’s opinion. They have experienced many tragedies and sorrows, and they aren’t going to waste one minute worrying that death or disease might be in their immediate future, because they can face anything with their faith, family and friends.

I’m feeling pretty good about being fifty. My friend Suzanne sent me a beautiful silver Jerusalem cross. Pastor Sheilah commented, “That’s the mature Christian’s cross.” At first I thought, “Oh, that’s not me.” But I’ve rethought and I believe I can accept the mantle of ‘mature Christian’ and hope that I am someone who might be always pointing to Christ.

Suzanne also sent me the fly-leaf of a book she is reading in a bible study group, “Jubilee Time” by Maria Harris. “Starting with the biblical teaching that the fiftieth year marks a time for celebration and reflection as well as the embarkation point of a new journey, Harris helps women enter the second half of life with a refreshed spirituality, an increased freedom, and a richer sense of themselves.” I’ve ordered the book and I look forward to sharing insights.

I think one of the greatest gifts mature women have to share is their wisdom. I have been the beneficiary of this wisdom. I hope that I’ll have some to share.

Vicar Kristin has met some amazing under 55 women too!! The names Jen and Mary come to mind! Although I still have a few years left before the magic 5-0, I look forward to you sharing your insights, which, of course, I will pass on to Jen.
Now, Vicar Kristin, I’m wondering where are the you-dressed-as-a-shepherd photos from this morning?

Do I *really* want to get “wisdom” from Kristin via my mom?

  3. Jen – not to worry – I won’t let your Mom censure my wisdom … I’ll share it with you directly!

Mary – I’m quite disappointed because I have no photos of the St. James pageant. I’m having such troubles figuring out my camera (lost the manual)& I chose a new setting thinking it worked … it didn’t! All the photos are too fuzzy to post. I’m hoping I’ll get a group shot from someone else.

  4. Jennifer Chase says:

Is that supposed to be re-assuring??

  5. Yes. … I’m surprised you needed to ask!

I met your brother tonight at the Christmas Eve service. I tried not to overwhelm him with my wit and wisdom, but you’d have to ask him about his first impressions!!!

Is this where I say “Poor Trevor”?

Merry Christmas, and safe travels to you.
