The Chi-Cheemaun is the ferry which runs from South Baymouth (Manatoulin Island) to Tobermoray (north tip of the Bruce Pennisula). She winters at the port of Owen Sound. Each fall she has a special cruise event from Tobermoray through the Georgian Bay into Owen Sound, and the same occurs in the spring when she puts to sea. (Remember – I had the tour of the lake boat freighter, so I have all the jargon now!) John & Liz, Shirley L. and myself have bought tickets to take the “Annual Spring Cruise” which will be on Thursday, May 1st. The Chi-Cheemaun will depart the Owen Sound Harbour at 10:30 a.m. Arrival in Tobermoray is 3:00 p.m. Passengers will be met in Tobermoray by school buses and returning to Owen Sound at approximately 4:30 p.m. Adults – $45 plus $10 for the buffet (if you chose). Please join us! Even if it turns out to be a foggy day, we’ll have lots of fun being together!
It is sooooo tempting here to make some comment about how some of us have to work that day, while others …….
You know, May is birthday month for Gerald and I … you could treat us!?!?!
Everybody knows that pastors only work one day per week and usually for an hour or two at that. Is it any wonder Kristin and friends can take a spring cruise?
Then again Kristin could take Mary and Gerald and a birthday cake but the bonfire from all the candles would probably sink the poor Chi-Cheemaun.
DOUG!!! That candle comment was simply not nice! Kristin must have put you up to it! All along it has been Gerald and I who have been uttering the “Poor Doug” phrase … ahhh, how soon you forget!!!
If pastors only work one day per week, and usually only for an hour or two, like you said, and if interns only do a fraction of the work of their pastor supervisor, Kristin could stay on the boat all summer ….
How often do I have to say that learning about the broader community in which I live and minister is part of the pastoral mandate.
I expect the cruise to be an intense spiritual experience and the school bus ride back to Owen Sound a test of faith!
And I’ll proabably say grace at lunch, so that makes it official ministry time for sure.
I forgot to say, “Poor Kristin”
And what’s this ‘fraction of the work’ comment supposed to mean? Are you suggesting that my presence adds to Pastor Sheilah’s workload? Am I a burden? Where’s John when I need a supportive voice???
Doug and Mary: I know for a fact that our Intern works TWO hours a week. Don’t forget that we have two churches in our parish and we can’t let Kristin away with just one hour at St. James and then slack off at St. Peter’s. Liz and I are two of the “friends” that are going along on this trip. We will be supervising the Vicar, so this will be a community involvement exercise.
John – I’m laughing out loud!!! You!!! And since when did we become friends – in quotes?? Can’t we be friends without qualifications! You devil!
However, I’m pleased to know you’ll be there to help me keep from getting into trouble! (History tells me that the problem will be Liz’s – you and I will be getting into trouble! YEAH!) I should probably have you as the moderator of this blog … but considering your last comment … I RETAIN the POWER!
okay, John and Kristin …. I noticed you totally ignored Doug’s candle comment, which was probably a good thing to do, BUT do not you think there could have been a “poor Gerald” and “poor Mary” comment made here????
While my first comment was directed mostly at Kristin, Mary and Gerald I was also thinking about John and Liz but they are so nice I didn’t want to cast any disparaging remarks their way. (And it’s not that Kristin, Mary, and Gerald deserve sarcastic digs, most of the time anyway..) You know how retired folks always claim to be busier after they retire, well it seems to me (and don’t get me wrong here, I would love to be in their shoes or boots) that retired folks make themselves seem busy but they really spend most of their time putzing around – like sitting on a boat for the better part of a day just enjoying the spring air.
Uhhh, Doug … you may just have dug yourself deeper into trouble! Now I know that what they say is true … the longer you live with someone the more you become like them … so indeed a “POOR DOUG” comment is needed here … if you get what I mean?!?!
Some days, retirement can’t come soon enough … even if all one does is spend most of their time “putzing around”. Love that phrase!!
I believe Kristin may be “working” today – attending an ELW conference. Now that she’s “worked” on a Saturday, she’ll likely be asking for overtime pay or something…
I have now returned from a wonderful day at the ELW (church women’s) convention. Wonderful worship, inspiring speaker, goofiness & good visiting. It’s pretty wonderful to call this work. Indeed … I am ‘called’!
Doug – Your ‘retirement envy’ is showing!
Doug: When Kristin is ordained, you can then put in your letter of retirement and do all the putzing around that you want. Kristin won’t have time for all that any longer, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the out of doors twelve months of the year, while Kristin will only get one month off. Then we can say “Poor Kristin.”
I should have added to my last comments, that we will probably be saying “Poor Gerald” when he retires. He still has a lot of penance to work on for that late night loss of memory when he had Mary running down the road from St. James one evening during Lent.
To Doug:At least one member of your family realizes how wonderful Liz and I are.
Poor Gerald??!?!?! Whatever do you mean?!?!?!
He’s been a pretty good boy lately … why he even brought me home from church today!
And Kristin, we missed you this morning. Was the church ever quiet … and yes, I was awake!
John: Doug isn’t retiring and I don’t want to be encouraging any of those thoughts!
Mary: Usually I look out from the front of the church and you’re sleeping … okay … nodding off! What’s with this being awake when I’m not there??
Now I have to ask…is the experience of my absence a “good quiet” or a “bad quiet”?
I preached a REALLY long time this morning at Our Saviour’s. Possibly I should have provided more quiet opportunities. However, I may well have put them to sleep. Is it possible for a preacher to put the Holy Spirit to sleep? I never thought about that before.
