I asked Gerald (my internship chair) for permission to feed the chipmunk that lives outside my dining room window. He said it was OK as long as the racoons didn’t move in. Now, I have a flock. I have a squirrel, one blue jay, a bunch of black birds, two red-wing black birds, chickadees, sparrows, and I’m not sure what the other little birds are.
First I bought sunflower seeds, but now I’ve bought ‘wild bird’ seed mixture. I’ve got five little piles out on my sidewalk. I’m hoping to keep the fighting to a minimum. I’ve discovered the big birds like the big seed & the little birds like the leftovers.
When Doug calls I always look out the window & tell him who is visiting for a snack. Doug says I’m turning into one of those ‘crazy old bird women’. What kind of stereotype is he talking about?
It’s only a question of time before you start have meaningful conversations with your animal friends and attributing certain personalities to each of them.
What are you trying to do, be the next St. Francis of Assisi?
Doug: You are really starting to open up on this blog. Good for you. You are not quite the quiet one that we met on the Cheech. Probably because Kristin was with you then.
I know what it is like Doug …. Gerald is the dominant one when we are together. I just stay quietly in the backgound.
All I can say is “poor Doug” and “poor Mary” …….
PLEASE – don’t encourage Doug! He’s feeling quite perky about being encouraged to comment on this blog!
John – What are you talking about!! I specifically recall Doug chattering away. Oh wait, was that only the echo of my own voice in my head?
Jen – I think the St. Francis reference is great! I’d like to follow his role model – blessing of the beasts and all.
Today there is a red-headed woodpecker on the tree outside my dining room window.
