I have made no secret of my loathing of Tuesdays when we create the Sunday bulletin. I whine. I moan. … but still I have to fold … and fold … and fold bulletins and inserts. Pastor Sheilah and Michael, the Parish secretary, offer no mercy or clemency. I have been on a nine month sentence of folding bulletins.
What does one do to make folding bulletins more interesting? You figure out how fast you can do it! Okay … it’s only 100 bulletins, but still I moan and whine.
The SK technique, taught to me by my home pastor (who is from AB), is to use a spoon to fold. You save your thumb from wear & tear and paper cuts, plus you make a crisp fold. I usually do atleast five bulletins at a time.
Ever since September I have been trying to convince Pastor Sheilah & Michael to try the spoon technique. They refused! They were adamant! They mocked me!! They abandoned me so that I had to fold ALL the bulletins while they pretended to work on something else (OKAY – that’s a lie, but it creates greater sympathy for me!).
Finally, today, Michael said he wanted to receive instuction. I took him into the secret world where only the brave dare trood … Pastor Sheilah continues to refuse to be taught by the student!!! And now she’s going to retire next month & her folding opportunities will become few!
Michael was a bit of a remedial student, but I was patient … and only a little bit sarcastic (I bet that’s a lie, too!) The first step was to select the proper spoon size … it has to feel just right and fit your thumb neatly. I realized this once in a lifetime situation and ran to grab my camera. Click here to see the series of five photos capturing Michael encounters with the mysteries of Sunday bulletin folding.
I have no idea why Mary is always saying I only work one day a week and then it’s only for three hours!
Kristin: What an accomplishment!! Just imagine the success you would have had if your internship had lasted 12 months!!
I will never look at another folded bulletin the same way again!!
Oh, what talent you have Kristin!
Now I feel appreciated! All that sweat & tears over bulletins … I guess Michael & Pastor Sheilah were right when they tried to explain that I might want to consider embracing servant ministry.
John – I’m glad to see a bad cold hasn’t affected your sense of humor!!
Mary – You are mocking me … but I’ll accept the ‘talent’ remark as a compliment. I keep telling Michael it is a ‘gift’ to be able see mocking as as actually complement! He thinks I’m nuts …
