Selecting Movies with Doug

I thought it would be fun for Doug and I to have some “dates” this summer by going to movies. We own a lot of movies and we rent a lot of movies, but we don’t go to the expense of seeing a movie in the theatre very often. What a nightmare it has been as Doug and I can’t agree on what movie to see.

I really wanted to see “Sex & the City” as I enjoyed that TV series. I heard people say it was awful but I want to see the characters. Doug absolutely refused to go. He wanted to see Forever Knight (Batman) but I wouldn’t go … I can wait til we can rent it. We compromised and went to see X-Files. Doug wasn’t very thrilled but I enjoyed seeing the characters. It’s not academy award winning drama, but it was fine.

So then Doug got to pick the next movie. He wanted to see “The Mummy.” It was horribly violent and Doug thought it was great. I had my eyes covered for most of the movie.

We saw a trailer on TV last night for a movie from the Cohen brothers which is coming out in a few weeks. It has lots of good actors. Doug said, “Maybe we could agree to see that movie.”

September 1st – I’m back to school and date season is over.

Thirty years of marriage – what role models!

  1. Doug says:

Kristin doesn’t notice violence in movies she picks (X-Files and the latest Indiana Jones). I didn’t, for the record, think The Mummy was great, but it was least as good as X-Files. Kristin usually gets her way with movies, it’s only on real trash (Sex in the City for example) is when I will dig my heels in – so it is not “Poor Kristin” time today.

  2. Mary Golem says:

I hear you, Doug!! No “poor Kristin” comment from me until she resolves the “favouritism” issue!!
Doug and Kristin … you sound soo much like Gerald and I … our tastes in movies differ greatly. But doesn’t matter much … I fall asleep all the time anyways! Just ask Jen…

  3. Looks like Doug & I have resolved one dispute. Tomorrow night we’ll go to the 2nd run theatre … I’ll see Sex & the City and he’ll see Hellboy or Iron Man (for the 2nd time!) How’s that for a date night!!

  4. Mary – I rarely fall asleep in the theatre … only at really bad movies. However I can’t seem to stay awake when we rent movies. Doug & I always argue when we go to rent a movie. I say “I’ve never seen this before.” and he’ll say “You slept through it!”

  5. John Pulley says:

You should see Liz when she picks tv programs and quickly falls asleep. Generally she falls asleep when I want to watch a sports show, but when I go to change channels after she falls asleep, she wakes up and wants her channel back.

  6. I have always considered Liz to be a fine example of ‘womanhood’!

  7. Jen Chase says:

Doug and Kristin, you two NEED to move to Ontario and go on double dates with my parents. Either that or Mike and I need to move to Calgary and go to therapy with Rhett and Leah. :)

A date night is going to two separate movies? Romantic. Even Mike said that’s “a really nice date” with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Honestly, how can you make out in the theatre if you’re in two separate ones?? (I shouldn’t comment on that…. Mike and I have been known to discuss database design during the previews!)

Seriously though, Mike and I often rent two movies – one I prefer for us both to watch, and one for him to watch and me to sleep through. We only go to the theatre for mutually agreed upon movies, like Prince Caspian.

  8. I would comment on that whole therapy thing, which is funny… but you completely sidelined me with the database comment. That is so unspeakably nerdy… ugh. I am speechless.

  9. That’s my boy! Way to go!! Up the ante!…..Rhett – The Golem women are going to get you for that remark – I can’t wait!

  10. Jen Chase says:

To my defense, my work had just switched donor database systems, and so part of the catching up on the news of the day was talking about the new system. So there. Besides, shouldn’t I get points for being able to handle a conversation about nerdy topics with my computer-y husband?

  11. Jenn – You are the number ONE point getter! I am the official hander-outer of these accolades. Now if I only knew what ‘database systems’ actually meant or looked like it might earn you even more points.
