Belly Dancing

Yeah … I knew that title would catch your interest! Yesterday morning I attended our church women’s breakfast gathering with Suzanne. There we 60+ women in attendance – women of all ages from grandmas to mom’s with their infants. Lots of great conversation with my church friends plus a delicious meal. With Jodi on piano and Kathy leading the singing we had lots of laughs with the songs they had created based on Christmas carols. Kathy is an outstanding singer, and hearing her sing so seriously and beautifully while singing these crazy lyrics was a hoot. Here is but one example of their creativity (based on the carol “O Holy Night”):

O what a sight.
The lights are brightly shining.
Is it a dimple on my right cheek I see?
Long lay my jeans
on the bottom of my closet,
They haven’t moved since
my first child’s birth.

A thrill of hope, my weary legs rejoicing,
They might just fit,
if I can do some hoisting.
I fall on my knees,
oh hear the seams are ripping.
Oh my behind.
Since the night my child was born,
Oh my behind, on my, oh my behind.

Linda, who has a long association with our church, spoke to us about the history of belly dancing. She operates a local business teaching belly dancing. Then we got to practise … for about 50 minutes. It was wonderful! Linda also talked about belly dancing as the expression of a lifetime of women’s wisdom. Although we might think of a young women as being very attractive when she dances, the true beauty is when one of the “Grandmas” dances which reflects a life of joy and sorrow.

I think I’d like to belly dance. It would certainly use a lot of muscles.

I thought the belly dancing would catch fire very quickly, but no one has ventured a remark. I sure would like to see Vicar Kristin belly dancing before ordination.

Some of the very fluid hand/arm movements reminded me of a liturgical prayer form of lifting our hands up and out to God.

The shimmie-ing down the aisle … maybe not so much … please don’t dare me … it’s the “devil” in me …. Although in traditional dance the woman wears a long tunic (to the ankles) with a scarf around the hips … sounds like an alb and cincture??!

For whatever reason … perhaps I’ve finally been blocked from this site! … my posts aren’t reading, nor are the responses.

I’ve sent an emergency email to Rhett!! We can’t have this happen again!

  5. Rhett says:

Hey Mary. Not sure what’s going on. I just did a couple tests (one with your information) and the comments went through. Maybe just something buggy. Let me know if you are seeing any error messages or anything.
