Biblically-Correct Nativity

I take special pleasure in driving my family crazy with my “antics” and I think I’ve reached a new, personal best.

Since I’ve started decorating early (as of last weekend) I decided I wanted to put my nativity set out. This seems REALLY too early, so I needed to be creative. I decided upon a biblically correct nativity. This means that the barn is currently empty except for the cow and two chickens. The barn is on the free-standing bookcase. (Note: you can see the shepherds in the upper left hand corner of photo.)

The three shepherds with their one lamb are up on the secretary which is the “hill overlooking the barn”. (There is only one lamb because Phoenix chewed up the rest of the sheep a few years ago when the nativity set was placed unfortunately too low.)

The three wise men and their camels are in the dining room because they are on a really long trip and it will take a number of weeks for them to get to the bookcase.

My plan is that each weekend I’ll move the sheep to a new pasture and move the wise men a little further on their journey. In a few weeks Mary and Joseph will begin their journey out of a drawer.

Baby Jesus and the three stars that go on top of the barn will have to wait until Christmas morning to appear.

Emily is exasperated. She is emphatic that she’s NOT going to answer any of her friends questions when they come over and ask why there’s only a cow and two chickens in the barn. I told her it was a great witnessing opportunity.

I can’t write what her response was.

Well, Kristin, there’s no need to imagine ways in which you are a bit ‘unique’ – you provide us with a never-ending supply of insanity! :)

To be fair, nativity scenes with wise men drive me INSANE. I refuse to buy them because they are so biblically inaccurate. The First Noel also drives me crazy…. (ie: the shepherds didn’t see the star!)

Jen – Thanks for your comment. I really thought this post would generate a bit more excitement … either over my excentricities or the whole mashed together birth stories.

Yet, I’m not sure that I’ll be able to wait it out … leaving baby Jesus in the drawer isn’t easy.

Today I move the sheep to a new field and the wisemen move a bit farther on their journey. I think I’ll let the cow out of the barn for a bit and let the chickens look for food a bit farther “a field.”

I’m also surprised that the rif-raf hasn’t commented on this post yet… perhaps our thoughts on nativity scenes are just too deep for them….

So when will the wise men join the nativity? Epiphany?

  4. Kristin says:

We always take our decorations down on New Years Day. Last year we took them down early because we also travelled to Calgary. I gues there will be no “epiphany” for the wise men at my house. … Our else I could have a little chat with them … share some deep thoughts … and then wrap them up.

  5. Jennifer Chase says:

Ah, so you’re only Biblically-correct pre-Christmas? *shakes head*

  6. Jennifer Chase says:

One more thing – having a chat with the wise men? What ‘wisdom’ are you hoping to glean?

  7. Mary Golem says:

And you two wonder why someone “normal” like me would not join in on such “discussions”. Hmmm…. trying to remain normal….

  8. Jennifer Chase says:

Well, Mom, remember that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree… That means I’m just like my father mother parents.

  9. Kristin says:

“Trying to remain normal” – it is only because the love of God has descended into my heart that I cannot make a response. I understand that I don’t win any brownie points with God not writing what I was thinking …(all that seminary education wasn’t a waste!!)

  10. Jennifer Chase says:

So, how many thousands of dollars has seminary cost you, to only learn so far that you can’t earn brownie points with God??

Or maybe that’s wisdom you were waiting to learn from the wise men?

    :D

  11. Kristin says:

And I never know where those wise men are going to be in my house! They cover a lot of distance in one day.

  12. Fran says:

Well I thought it was a great idea no matter how unique or zany! I tried to enlist Kristin to set up mine, so she did. Then she left back to Regina, and I moved my living room around. Now I’m not sure where the shepherds or wise men should be or in which direction! TAlk about abnormal!!

I think if you whistle the camels should come running! And the one sheep was laying down so it’s probably still in the same place. “Seek and yea shall find”
