Rotary Carol Festival

Last night Doug and I attend the 68th annual Christmas Carol Festival held at a downtown church. We arrived to the church bells ringing out carols. The half block walk, in the surprisingly warm crisp air (-1), the ringing bells were beautiful. The program lasted 2.5 hours and culminated with all in attendance joining the final choir on “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night.” The quality of the choirs is always superb and there is always a few young choir and those little kids are so sweet.

Doug attends atleast one of the five evenings of festival every year. It soothes his soul. Plus he has a sentimental attachment. Thirty-six years ago when Doug was 11-12 years old, his elementary school sang at the Carol Festival … and it was/and is a big deal to get to sing at this event. They sang “O Holy Night” and it still gives him chills remembering how great their little school choir sounded.

I don’t always go to this event. I have whiny reasons … like it lasts too long … I’ll be tired in the morning … It might be more true to say that I rarely go. You know the old saying, “You don’t do the things you should do … which would make you happier.” But Doug blackmailed me by saying “I owed him.” (Remember how Doug went to the Steve Bell concert and wasn’t very happy about it?) Well my debt is paid and I couldn’t have enjoyed myself more. It truly feels like the season of Advent is in my heart.

And Mary … just for you … and this is a true story … as we were putting our coats on, the woman in the pew behind us said to Doug, “Where did you find your beautiful date?” Doug replied, “I found her on a volleyball court.” (That’s a true answer, but a whole different story.) Even I’m not creative enough to make up a story like that!!

The goofy, blog-able material of my life just never ends!!

Just noted my math error … re: Doug … 46 years ago at the Rotary festival … Doug is much older than me … I don’t know how I could make that error … unless of course I’m getting old too!?!
