I’m going to get to visit some of my old friends. Many of you know I like to watch soap operas. The correct term is ‘serials.’ We have lots of examples of night-time serials, as well. I like serials in books, too. I enter into the characters lives, watching from a distance as they face all sorts of problems, make new friends, work out convulted plots … a fantasy world.
My favourite books to read are murder mysteries. The photo shows my three favourite authors – the only authors I read. It all started many years ago when we were visiting Doug’s brother for a few days. Their small town had a regional library and Marilylle asked me if I’d like to go to the library with her. She encouraged me to sign out a couple of books and she would return them when I left. The author I read was Mary Higgins Clark – the master of serial murder mysteries (I’m sure there are other masters.) I was hooked!
Since then, summer-time reading has been all about escapism. Remember, I was working on my undergrad degree for a number of years … it was a treat to not have any textbooks to read.
I don’t usually buy hardcover books, but Stabenow and Mott Davidson don’t ‘produce’ a book every year. (They have other serial lines that they write, which I don’t read.) I can count on Evanovich to have a book for me … she numbers her books … I’m on “Fearless Fourteen.”
The protagonist in each of these series is a woman, as are the authors. Now my decision is “Who do I read first?” I think I’ll meet up with Kate Shugak in “Whisper to the Blood.” I haven’t visited with Kate for several years … and she had been so happily in love, then her man was murdered … so she’s been bleak for at least two books. I think they should call these books murder mystery/romance novels. I’ll be up late most nights, consuming them in a few days.
What are you reading this summer?
Also note in the photo my new quilt-type bedspread on my second spare bed.
I’m reading blog posts by Kristin Soveran!!!
When we get back to the river and we have some time to ourselves, I’m reading “Castaway Kid” and “The Shack” … most unusual for me ‘cuz I’m really a non-reader…except for the newspaper every day! Gerald reads his fishing and hunting magazines!
I love to read and haven’t done enogh of it in awhile. So far my summer reading list is a Danielle Steele novel (of course!) and Michael J Fox’s book….hopefully I will actually have time to read however between “Home” work. Kristin, let me know when you are placing an order at Augsburg.
I have a $50 gift certificate that Augsburg Fortress gave to all the seminary graduates … so I will be placing an order. They don’t have any murder mysteries though … sigh
Over the course of my road trip I read the other two murder mysteries. Davidson and Stabenow were a bit of a disappointment, but Evanovich is always top notch!
