Below is the biography which I included in the bulletin. Bishop Cindy suggested that I write one. You’ll note that I have deleted last names, which is my usual custom on this blog.
All three of my brothers attended my ordination. From L-R: Leslie, Gordon, Kristin, Martin.
Kristin was born to Tom and Gladys and raised on the family farm six miles south of Hanley, SK. Kristin was baptized at the Hanley Evangelical Lutheran Church and was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Hawarden, SK. She has three older brothers: Leslie & Barbara (Swift Current), Gordon & Dyanne (Calgary) and Martin & Donna (Hanley).
In this photo, back row (L-R): Rhett, Leslie, Gordon, Donna, Martin. Front row (L-R): Leah, Barbara, Doug, Kristin, Emily, AnnaMarie, Stephen.
Here is the balance of the biography:
Kristin married Doug Soveran on July 15, 1978. They have two children: Rhett and Emily. Rhett is married to Leah and they live in Calgary. Emily attends Luther College – University of Regina and works part-time, while she lives at home.
Although Kristin never wanted to attend church, her good friend, Suzanne, encouraged Kristin to participate in Christ Lutheran’s “Mom’s Morning Out” program after the birth of Emily in 1987. Suzanne always made sure that Rhett and Emily attended Vacation Bible School every summer. Through the encouragement of neighbourhood friends, Kristin and Doug sent Rhett to Circle Square Ranch Camp during the summer of 1993. The Holy Spirit touched Rhett’s life and Rhett asked his parents to begin to attend church. Another neighbour Colette was instrumental in inviting Kristin and Doug to attend a Catholic-based retreat weekend which was pivotal in Kristin’s early faith journey.
God has worked powerfully though the members of Christ Lutheran in welcoming and nurturing the entire Soveran family. In 2000, Dr. Bryan, one of Kristin’s professors of Religious Studies at Luther College, University of Regina and Pastor Bob “planted the seed” for Kristin to consider a call to ministry when Rev. Dr. Faith, then president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary – Saskatoon, made a recruitment/promotional visit to Regina. It seemed like ‘impossible thinking’ at that time, but ever so slowly a call to ministry was discerned.
The journey continues as Kristin has accepted the call to serve as Assistant Pastor at the Southwest Lutheran Parish: Swift Current, Kyle, Herbert, Cabri, & Admiral Saskatchewan.
