Erik’s Ordination – Edmonton AB

Erik's Ordination - July 4 2009 Doug and I have just returned from a road trip to Edmonton for Erik’s ordination at Calvary Lutheran Church. We got away on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. We ran into to some showers right off the bat but we had a lovely drive to Doug’s brother – Lawrence and Marilylle. Their home, which is designed as a cottage, overlooks Little Beaver Lake about 1.5 hours south of Edmonton.

We arrived in time to see the start of the SK Roughriders vs BC Lions game on an HD TV! And, of course, the Riders won. We should have gone for a walk that evening instead as steady showers kept us inside the next morning. After a delicious lunch we were off to Edmonton.

I had not been able to attend any of my fellow students’ ordinations, so I wanted to make the effort for the trip to Edmonton. Erik’s family is very musical and there was a strong brass accompaniment to all the hymns. They served us a wonderful supper. It was very nice to see about five people who I went to seminary.

We were back to the hotel by 8:00 p.m. and were on the road this morning by 9:30 a.m. It was an eight hour trip with a few stops. Doug bought a handheld GPS system and it worked! Although we frequently opted for another route and “Samantha” (the voice of Doug’s choice) had to ‘recalculate.’ I wanted to have “Lee” from Australia with his masculine voice, but Doug wanted a woman’s voice. I think it is because Samantha sounds like me and it’s very reassuring for Doug.

I’m in the “eleven days and counting” mode until my own ordination. Even better it is only eight days until Mary & Gerald arrive!

Your SK riders were lucky to win that game!! We have our new pastor now. We assisted him yesterday and managed to help him get over the nervousness of his first service. All we need now is for Bell to get into the parsonageand fix the dead phone line so that he can receive calls and get going on his immigration application for landed immigrant status.
Blessings as you continue to count down the days to your ordination. Give our love to Doug as well.

John – It is important to note that Riders is spelled with a capital “R”! I need you to offer the appropriate homage!

And honestly … you didn’t have anything to say about “Samantha”???

  3. John Pulley says:

How careless of me, Kristin. But, I would really wonder if Doug would want a Samantha voice similar to his wife’s voice. Don’t you suppose “she” should have a “sultery-come this way” voice to keep Doug alert when he is on his own?

  4. Kristin says:

Well … that’s what I was getting at when I was suggesting Samantha’s voice reminded him of me.

I was trying to be subtle … like always …

  5. John Pulley says:

Thanks Kristin. I checked in just before going to bed and I can go to sleep with a smile on my face. I will thank God that He gave you a sense of humour.

  6. Mary Golem says:

Not only did God give Kristin a sense of huumour, He also gave her a commanding directional voice – it’s unforgettable . . . we know . . . we heard it once on our way to Walter’s Falls! Once was enough! POOR DOUG!!!
The countdown is on … guess I better be nicer in my post comments or we’ll be sleeping with the dogs!!!!

  7. Mary Golem says:

    ooops…spelled humour wrong….you know what I meant!

  8. Kristin says:

I’d really like to forget the Walter’s Falls incident.

And Mary … have you not heard the phrase “let sleeping dogs lie”? The dogs will probably want to sleep with you despite any protests you make. It won’t be a problem … they only weigh 60 pounds each and it is a queen size bed.

Hey John – I’m glad my objective was met!
