Backing into Parking Spots

I’ve never quite gotten over the Ontario experience of “everyone – yes, everyone – backs into parking spots.” I don’t mean they drive through, they back in.

Last night I was at the bridal shower for a young woman from Japan. She met her fiancee when he taught English as a second language in Japan. She moved to Victoria nine months ago, and arrived in Regina earlier this week so that she could marry her fiancee in his hometown. I asked about her reactions to Regina. She couldn’t believe how large the parking spaces were in our parking lots. In Japan (she is from a city of 60,000) the parking spaces (not the lots) are so small, so tight, that everyone has to back into the spots.

Now, Ontario doesn’t have tight parking spots so I don’t know the rationale for backing into spots. Doug’s explanation is “You never know when there is going to be a fire and you have to get away really fast.”

I get to go to their wedding tomorrow, so I’m very excited for the celebrations.

Maybe Regina-ites are forward thinking people. Or maybe they can’t back-up!
I’d like to think we in Ontario are better drivers!
Whatever the case, it is soooo wonderful your experiences in Ontario are staying with you!!
    Enjoy your day!

It is amazing about some of these experiences stayin with me … that was exactly the right description. As soon as Yuki starting exclaming about the parking … I was giggling! And who knew that parking would have this cosmic effect. Sort of like you being amazed by our horizontal traffic lights.
