Lone Tree

Lone TreeMy Ontario friends might find this post a little humorous … but a significant landmark as you drive north from Swift Current on #4 Highway (towards Kyle & 2.5 hours latter- Saskatoon) … is a tree …… a lone tree ……. a tree all by its lonesome … THE Lone Tree.

I rather chuckled to myself when my brother was driving me out to Kyle on my first Sunday in September. Leslie pointed out … that’s the “Lone Tree.” Nobody knows how it got there. This area isn’t known for trees (as compared to northern SK as you enter the Canadian Shield.) I couldn’t figure out why I would want to know about a single tree.

About two weeks after seeing the lone tree I was in confirmation class. I discovered one student lived on a farm. I asked “Where?” She said, “Do you know where the Lone Tree is?” … With confidence I could say “Yes!”

Yes, we have trees in Ontario, Kristin!
We use road signs as a way of providing directions, especially to out-of-provincers. However, they sometimes think they know more than the locals … remember Kristin YOU telling Gerald how to get to Walter’s Falls!!!

Yes, Mary … but do ever make a point of celebrating just ONE? We have so few that ONE tree is amazing! … and did you happen to notice on your visit to SK that we DO NOT have road signs?? I was really impressed by all the signage in Ontario … and all the paved back roads … and that every farm/home/acreage has a 911 “fire number” that is posted at the entry to their farm. It really made places easy to fine, especially when I had your nephew’s fine map that he created! …… poor, little SK doesn’t have any of that fancy stuff … not like you rich and powerful ON folks! … I have to admire my ability to weave compliments and insults into a single sentence!

I could make a comment about how we have road signs here in Ontario because our literacy rate is high enough to warrant them, but that’s too mean even for me. :)

Although, when the province is so flat that you can see from one end to the other, who needs signs?

(Don’t worry, I’m done with the SK jokes!)

    Happy new year!
